THE STORY BEHIND THE GARDEN WITHIN.   A whole new VISION into life gardening!!!   Have you ever wondered why gardening is such a popular pastime the world over?   WELL...   I would like share with you a special story. When we look back into those formative years of childhood, we can all find , a moment , a person or  an incident from which we draw inspiration many years on.   One such scenario proved to be an incredible source of insight and support for me and many others, guiding me towards my life work,  where I was eventually to find myself. A place where as one of life’s drifters, I listened and  I observed synchronicity – the strange and meaningful coincidences that shape our lives in such a powerful way. I followed the flow and now my time is invested in supporting others in following their own flow.   My childhood was not a happy one, but how priceless that was to become, now I stand as  the pioneer of an amazing system called HET  Holistic Educational Therapy that today not only supports so many damaged, abused or traumatised children and their families across the world, but also one of the most powerful tools for healing  the wounded inner child within us all,   In those early days of embarking on life’s journey, my mother (Pat) had a saying she would often quote to me, and would write in the many multi coloured autograph books that I filled with the thoughts and expressions of those around me whom I loved and respected.   So simple:   “Life is a garden without any doubt, if you  put good things then you get good things out.”   Eventually I grow up enough to understand the metaphor and then to incorporate it into a powerful tool in my work of empowering people around me – for the most powerful place to stand is right next to someone who has just been empowered!   And so the concept of ‘the garden within’ happened... a fun game? a strange similarity to real life? a tool for recognising and acting upon our own self perceptions? a tool for change and creating the life that we always wanted for ourselves and is our entitlement by birth??   ‘The Garden Within’ has proven to be all of this and so much more...   Try it for yourself, a few moments of your time? What have you got to lose?

Procedure:

Take a piece of blank drawing paper and draw a garden.. this can be any garden you like, an imaginary garden, one you’ve been to, one you’d like, one you seen...whatever you like.   When you finished – fold it  into three. This should divide your page into three width ways.     Then divide it into 2  and fold long ways. Like a book fold. So this is folded in half.

Interpretation

Look at what is drawn on your page.   What you have drawn and where you have placed it is a symbol.. a metaphor for what is happening in your life and why.
  • The bottom third of the page represents your past.
  • The middle third of the page represents your present.
  • The top third represents your future.
  • The left hand side represents your mother’s influence or the feminine influence in your life. The Yin dynamic
  • The right hand side represents your father’s influence of masculine influence in your life. Yang dynamic.
Look at what you have drawn and see what it signifies.  You could refer to dream dictionaries to understand the symbolism but quite simply for example:
  • Pools or ponds would suggest emotions / emotional issues.
  • Waterfalls – releasing emotional issues.
  • Streams – emotions flowing
  • Bird baths / bird tables / bird houses  - invitations
  • Fences – barriers... privacy.
  • Sheds – places where things are locked away or hidden.
  • Trees – personal growth  - Bare not seen the fruits of... blossoming, leafy – seeing the outcomes.. fruit – harvesting the benefits of..
  • Flowers – gifts .or opportunities
  • Pathways – directions taken
  • Walls – blocks
  • Birds – freedom / escape
  • Fish – movement / change
  • Vegetable patches or green houses – nourishment / investment / planning for future.
  • Gateways – new directions / opportunities
Time of year... Spring: new growth; summer: optimism : autumn, harvesting; winter – dormancy, rest     So before you, you have the story of your life as you perceive it -  a metaphor  ... your garden within!   Now what?   By understanding our own internal landscape in our lives ... OUR GARDEN WITHIN....we can start to make incredible changes in the way we see things and by making these changes in our life, in our own gardens, we can grow, arrange and create a whole new life!   By taking these ideas and metaphors  and actually creating them in our own outside ( of ourselves) garden space, we can start to take control of our life and create what we want to happen for ourselves – we ground these situations, scenarios where we want them – one section at our time – in our GARDEN!   Firstly, deal with the past – look at what we have perceived from the past, the troubles we had were gifts – although they  may  not have always been perceived as such! These are depicted by flowers in this exercise – where are you going to plant the flowers in your garden right now – we can change the past as simply as changing the way we perceive it... I have a very powerful saying – I once got bleeped off the BBC for saying this before the 9 pm watershed time whilst doing an interview on a show about stress management!!!   “The most fragrant roses grow through the deepest compost and the only difference twixt Sh**!  and compost is perspective.”   Planting flowers in the bottom end of your garden is transmuting the trouble of the past to personal growth experience for the present. Planting flowers in the middle or present section of your garden is the personal growth experience for the future. Planting flowers in the top or future section of your garden is where you see gifts before you on life’s path!   By using the metaphors in our drawing and planting them consciously in our garden as real objects we can start to change our perception and create and manifest in our life what we want to happen on our life’s  journey,   There are many ways we can use our ‘Garden Within’ to reflect our life process, the seasons, to reflect back our state of being, the light, to reflect our mood.   I am happy to share with anyone the feedback and interpretation of their personal gardens and to send you a very special garden meditation to try out for yourselves... please email me on lin@holisticeducationaltherapy.co.uk   Happy  Gardening!!!
